Ethics in Social Media? What's That All About?

Why is ethics is social media so important?⠀


Social media is relatively new and yet an integral part of an effective small business marketing strategy. Too many businesses on social media do not know why they’re doing what they’re doing. Haphazard posting for the sake of churning out content won’t do your business any favours. You may find yourself behaving inappropriately with your content and community management.


To be effective (and ethical), you need to plan for all the ways you can interact with customers on social media — not just preparing content, but responding to conversations, and even using what you know about your customers to serve up effective advertising. This should all be defined in your small business marketing strategy.


Are you choosing the right platforms for you?

Just because a network has billions of users, it does not mean it’s the right one for your company to use. Instead of trying to be everything to everybody, focus on the networks that are relevant to your business goals and objectives. It’s better to have a fantastic presence on one platform, than a lacklustre presence on a large number of platforms.


Manage your community effectively and ethically.

It’s important to remember that whenever you connect with a social media network, you are joining a community. In any community, there’s an appropriate time to discuss business. It would help if you treated the people in your community with respect and kindness.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s also critical to respect the boundaries of others. Aggressive targeted marketing has no place in social media. Your motivation for being a part of the community is to give others the benefit of your experience and to build relationships with other members of your community.


▪️ Be Authentic — people will respond to you more positively if you are sincere.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ▪️ Be Transparent — having hidden agendas will only count against you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ▪️ Communicate — get to know people as people and let them get to know you. 


You want to build relationships with others, and you want them to trust you and to consider you an expert in your area. You want to be the person who comes to mind first when they have a question. Connecting with people through social media channels is not a short-term thing; it is the beginning of a great relationship that will hopefully endure for a very long time.
